How Cozy? ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Game Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

Let’s Build a Zoo is a cute, colourful and surprisingly chaotic zoo management game where you’re given control of your very own animal park. On the surface, it looks like a sweet little tycoon sim filled with adorable animals, bright pixel art and satisfying enclosure building. Underneath that, though, is a much stranger and sillier game about moral choices, questionable shortcuts and the slightly unhinged business of running a zoo.

Developed by Springloaded and published by No More Robots, Let’s Build a Zoo takes the classic zoo management formula and gives it a playful indie twist. You’ll build habitats, hire staff, keep guests happy, breed animals, research new facilities and slowly expand your zoo from a small local park into a much busier attraction.

It’s charming, funny and surprisingly addictive, especially if you enjoy management games with plenty to unlock and tinker with.

Story

Let’s Build a Zoo doesn’t have a traditional story, but it does have a lot of personality.

The setup is simple: you’re put in charge of a new zoo and left to decide what kind of owner you want to be. You can build a wholesome, ethical animal park where welfare comes first, or you can start making much more questionable choices in the name of profit.

These moral decisions are what give the game its edge. Some are silly, some are darkly funny, and some make you realise very quickly that this is not just a straightforward cozy zoo builder. The contrast between the cute animals and the slightly chaotic business choices works really well, giving Let’s Build a Zoo a sense of humour that helps it stand out.

Gameplay

The main gameplay loop is all about building, expanding and improving your zoo.

You’ll create enclosures, place paths, add decorations, build food and drink stalls, hire staff and make sure both your animals and visitors are happy. As your zoo grows, you’ll unlock more animals, more facilities and more ways to customise how your park runs.

The animal collecting and breeding system is one of the best parts of the game. Rather than simply buying everything at once, you gradually build up your collection, breed new variants and work towards filling your zoo with different species. It gives the game a nice sense of progression and makes each new animal feel like a little achievement.

Then there’s the DNA splicing, which is where Let’s Build a Zoo gets properly ridiculous. You can combine animals to create strange hybrid creatures that are both adorable and slightly cursed. It’s silly, unexpected and completely fits the game’s sense of humour.

There is quite a lot to manage once your zoo becomes bigger. Staff, transport, animal welfare, guest happiness, research, shops and finances all need attention, so it can feel a little busy at times. If you like detailed management games, that depth is a big part of the appeal. If you prefer very relaxed cozy games with minimal pressure, it may occasionally feel a bit much.

That said, the constant stream of small goals makes it very easy to keep playing. There is always one more enclosure to improve, one more animal to unlock or one more area of the zoo to tidy up.

Graphics and Visuals

Let’s Build a Zoo is bright, colourful and full of charm. The pixel art style works perfectly for this kind of management game. Your zoo feels lively without becoming too overwhelming, with tiny visitors wandering around, staff rushing between jobs and animals moving through their enclosures.

The animals are especially cute, and it’s genuinely satisfying watching your zoo slowly fill with different species. The hybrid animals add an extra layer of weirdness, often looking like something that absolutely should not exist, but somehow belongs perfectly in the game’s world.

There are also plenty of decorations and buildings to help personalise your zoo. You can create little themed areas, improve your paths, add greenery and gradually turn your park into something that feels much more polished and intentional.

It can get a little visually busy later on, especially on smaller screens, but the overall style is cheerful and easy to enjoy. The soundtrack sits nicely in the background too, giving the game that upbeat tycoon feel while you rearrange enclosures and make increasingly questionable decisions.

Longevity

Let’s Build a Zoo has plenty of hours of gameplay. There are lots of animals to collect, facilities to unlock, research paths to complete and zoo layouts to improve. You may sit down to fix one small thing and suddenly realise you’ve spent hours redesigning half your park.

The replay value comes from the freedom in how you run your zoo. You can focus on building the most ethical park possible, or explore the game’s more chaotic choices and see just how ridiculous things can get.

For players who enjoy long-term management sims, there is a lot here to keep you busy.

Conclusion

Let’s Build a Zoo is a fun, colourful and surprisingly deep management sim that mixes cozy zoo building with a wonderfully mischievous sense of humour.

Its cute animals and bright pixel art make it immediately appealing, while its breeding systems, moral choices and park management give it much more depth than you might expect. It can be a little busy at times, so it may not be the most relaxing option if you’re looking for something completely gentle, but for players who enjoy tycoon games, animal collecting and a bit of chaos, it’s very easy to recommend.

It’s cozy, funny, strange and quietly addictive, with enough charm and depth to keep you tinkering with your zoo for hours on end.
